Registration Open for Emergency Preparedness Course March 3 and March 10, 2018

The Millington Fire Department and instructors  from CERTPius have scheduled the next two-day emergency preparedness class. Five years ago, they joined resources to offer free emergency response training to Millington area citizens.  The FEMA approved Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) classes have over 300 local graduates.

"CERT trains people how to plan and take care of themselves during emergency and disaster situations", says Lee Race, one of the founding Directors of CERTPius. "Professional Emergency Responders will be spread thin in large scale critical situations, and we can help people learn how to better prepare for emergencies and act responsibly", says Race.

CERTPius President Rick Pinelli, a former Sergeant in the NYPD auxiliary, is quick to add that CERT is in no way equal to or can replace the skills and abilities of professional emergency responders.  "Lee is right, we can help people learn to better  take care of themselves in emergency situations.  But when the pros show up, the best rule is to always listen to them", says Pinelli.

The CERT course includes:

    Disaster Preparedness

Incident Command System & Team Organization

    Fire Suppression

    Disaster Medical Operations

    Light Search and Rescue Operations

    Disaster Psychology

    Emergency Communications

Students use fire extinguishers, extricate victims, splint arms, and talk on a hand-held radio. The second day of the course- Disaster Simulation- is everyone's favorite  day. On this day students learn safe, instructor supervised, "hands-on" experience by applying the new techniques they've learned.

Under the direction of Millington Fire Department  Lt. Ted Dent, FEMA approved instructors are always present to lead the classroom and disaster simulation  sessions. Graduates are certified  by the State of Tennessee and receive CERT photo identification cards.

The CERTPius two-day  training course is free to the public.  The next session hosted by the Millington Fire Department is on March 3''and lO'h at the Millington Training Center on Dakar just south of the Millington-Memphis Airport. The Millington Fire Department training  facilities are certified  by the State of Tennessee as a Fire Training Academy. Which means you can receive some of the best, most in-depth CERT training in the country.
