MILLINGTON, TN (October 11, 2016) – The City of Millington is joining forces with CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County to keep the Millington community safe. An estimated 30+ years ago, Mr. Babe Howard established a phone number citizens could call to anonymously report a crime tip and created a bank account to reward citizens whose tips led to an arrest. While the phone number still exists, the program has been inactive for 30+ years.

Before his recent passing, Mr. Tony Dingman and Mr. Jim Music met with City officials about reviving the program. It was determined that the most logical solution would be to join forces with CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County, an established and proven local crime-fighting tool. The funds remaining in the original account set up by Mr. Howard, along with funds from the City of Millington were combined by Millington Board of Mayor and Aldermen by Resolution No. 59-2016 to make a $10,000.00 donation to Crimestoppers of Memphis and Shelby County.

“Crimes cross city and county borders, said Gary Graves, Director of Millington Public Safety. “The City of Millington supports all efforts to reduce the criminal influences in our community. CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County has the tools and resources necessary to provide an avenue for citizens to report criminal activity and remain anonymous,” said Graves.

CrimeStoppers was founded in 1981 by Memphis City Councilman Bob James under the direction of Mr. Buddy Chapman, who remains the program director today. CrimeStoppers is a 501c3 not-for-profit and non-partisan crime-fighting enterprise governed by a citizen Board of Directors and funded completely through private donations. The organization is independent of all government agencies, while supporting various local law-enforcement bodies, including the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, with information it receives from the public.

CrimeStoppers fundamentally is a way for citizens to anonymously provide tips to law enforcement groups, and receive awards when those tips lead to arrests. It helps bring justice to victims and deter crimes. Tips are received by phone, text or secure email. The tips line is a ubiquitous and popular local number: 528-CASH (2274). If you dial the Millington Crime Stoppers number, Ritter Communications has that number rolling directly to the Memphis Crime Stoppers line. Citizen tips to the organization have led to solving on average more than one felony crime per day over the last 35 years.

CrimeStoppers also operates programs that help senior citizens and school children, and has an outreach to Spanish-speaking citizens. The ongoing programs include Trust Pays, SeniorBsafe and Pago Confidencial. Additionally, CrimeStoppers is the lead organization in Copperstoppers, a program designed to fight the scourge of stolen metal in our communities, hurting infrastructure, causing blight and devastating homeowners and institutions such as churches and schools.
